Haunted San Diego Hotels

Haunted San Diego Hotels
San Diego is the second largest city in California and the eighth largest city in the United States. San Diego is known for its zoo, its parks, its beaches and its ghosts. Hauntedhouses.com lists San Diego as one of California's most haunted cities, along with San Francisco. Among other haunted attractions, San Diego has a few haunted hotels as well.

Hotel del Coronado

The Hotel del Coronado is located on the island of Coronado, California, across the bay from the city of San Diego. The Hotel Del was established in the 1880s and is designated a National Historic Landmark. Suites and rooms with an ocean view are available. The hotel has two outdoor pools, and offers bike rentals, surf lessons and fitness classes. The Hotel del Coronado is approximately a 15-minute drive from San Diego International Airport, and is across the bay from downtown San Diego, where additional outdoor activities are available.

According to legend, Kate Morgan was waiting for her husband to join her at the hotel on Thanksgiving weekend in 1892. He never showed up, and Kate killed herself on the steps leading from the hotel to the beach. Kate stayed in Room 3327 where apparitions of a woman have been sighted. This room is also the location of the most paranormal activity in the hotel, although one of the hotel's shops reports unusual happenings. Items in the shop have literally flown off the shelves, and a woman dressed in Victorian clothing has been sighted in the shop after hours. It has not been established whether this activity is the work of the ghost of Kate Morgan or if another ghostly entity is present.

Horton Grand Hotel

The Horton Grand Hotel is located a few blocks west of San Diego's famed Gaslamp District. The hotel originally opened in 1886 at a different location in the Stigaree, or Red Light, district. The current hotel opened in 1986 and is built using artifacts from two former hotels in the Stigaree district. The Horton Grand Hotel has 108 rooms, and no two rooms are alike. The hotel's restaurant is named after famed San Diego madam Ida Bailey, whose brothel was located near the current hotel's location. The Horton Grand is close to the San Diego Convention Center and conveniently located to all that San Diego has to offer.

The Horton Grand Hotel is said to be haunted by the ghost of Roger Whitaker, a gambler who favored the Stigaree district and Ida Bailey's brothel. Roger was caught cheating during a card game and escaped to his room, Room 309, of the original Grand Horton hotel. A shot was fired through the door, killing Roger. His spirit haunts Room 309 of the Horton Grand Hotel, and the hallway surrounding the room. Guests in Room 309 have been awakened by the doors of the armoire opening, lights turning off and on by themselves, and the bed being shaken. Roger's ghost has also appeared to guests in the hallway outside of Room 309.

Julian Hotel

The Julian Hotel is located in the town of Julian, California in San Diego County. The hotel was established in 1897 by freed slave Albert Robinson and his wife, Margaret. Today, the Julian Hotel is operated as a bed and breakfast. The town of Julian offers hiking, fishing, camping and horseback riding. It is conveniently located approximately one hour northeast of San Diego, allowing visitors to take advantage of the outdoor activities available in San Diego and the surrounding county.

Although Albert and Margaret Robinson were accepted by the Julian townspeople, they were still victims of discrimination. When Albert died in 1915, Margaret was forbidden to bury him in the town's all-white cemetery. Albert was insulted and is said to haunt Room 10 of the hotel. Guests have reported smelling pipe smoke, hearing footsteps, having covers tossed off beds and seeing windows open and close on their own.
