Like any culture, Indian cuisine varies from region to region, but there are staples that transcend local culture. Rice, lentils and spices like chili pepper, cumin and turmeric are dominant flavors. While meat is featured in many dishes, the majority of the Indian cuisine is vegetarian or vegan. The Syracuse, New York, area has two large populations essential to the success of Indian restaurants--Indian immigrants and vegetarians.

India House Restaurant

The India House is just north of the city in the suburban village of Liverpool. The menu features an array of vegetarian dishes and eight tandoor dishes, which are prepared in a clay pot. In addition to its wide menu, the India House carries a number of Indian beers, wines and non-alcoholic drinks.

Sahota Palace Indian Restaurant

The Sahota Palace bills itself as serving "exotic Indian cuisine." The menu features traditional Indian dishes, including tandoor and Biryani recipes. The kitchen serves 13 tandoori breads, including naans, unleavened bread like a pita; parathas, whole wheat bread; and puri, a deep-fried puffed bread. The Sahota Palace is on Old Liverpool Road, less than two minutes from Syracuse.
