Haunted Hotels in Austin, Texas

Haunted Hotels in Austin, Texas
From Native American warriors to Mexican wars to legislative battles, Austin has been at the center of the action in Texas since the town was founded in the 1830s on the banks of the Colorado River. Today, the river attracts boaters to its waters and hikers and bikers to the trails along its shores. Ghosts are said to haunt a number of places in town, including the stately capitol building itself. Though most of the modern glass and steel hotels around town boast no ghosts, two historic Austin inns have a long dossier of rumored hauntings.

Driskill Hotel

Hotels.com rates the Driskill as one of the top 10 haunted hotels in the United States. Located downtown near the capitol building and the nightlife on Austin's Sixth Street, the Driskilll was founded in 1886 by cattle baron Col. Jesse Driskill, one of several ghosts said to haunt the elegant hotel. Guests and employees of the Driskill have documented several spirits that wander the hotel's halls, ballroom, guest rooms and balconies. A young child's laughter floats through the downstairs ladies' room and hallways, and the sound of a bouncing ball echoes on the grand staircase. This is said to be the young daughter of a senator, who fell to her death while chasing her ball down the staircase in 1887. And the ghost of Col. Driskill still oversees his property, the scent of his cigars trailing after him, his rocking chair on the balcony still rocking by itself.

Driskill Luxury

Ghosts are not the only attraction for guests at the Driskill. The hotel is a National Historic Landmark offering luxury accommodations. Opulent antique furnishings co-exist with plasma televisions. Celebrities regularly stay at the Driskill when they're in Austin. Your pet is welcome, too, and will receive his own welcome gift of treats and toys.

Inn at Pearl Street

Austin's Inn at Pearl Street offers 12 rooms, ranging from private cottages to single rooms and suites. Hauntings in the fully restored rooms of the Greek Revival style mansion built in 1876 have mostly been in the form of flickering lights and uneasy feelings. However, some guests have reported seeing the ghostly image of a woman with a child in her arms, either walking the halls or rocking in a chair. The ghost is said to be that of the original mistress of the house, Stella Wilcox, comforting one of her two little boys, both of whom died before the age of 2.
