Resorts in Portland, Maine
Whether deep-sea fishing is your favorite activity or you're just looking for a relaxing day on the beach, accommodations in southern Maine offer a great place to relax, explore some of the country's best hardwood forests or enjoy the splendor of the Atlantic Ocean. Portland, once known for its forestry and eastern hardwoods, still has plenty of hiking trails and spots for a romantic picnic. The city and the surrounding area are home to a resort and hotels that pamper visitors while giving outdoors enthusiasts easy access to the Atlantic coastline.

Inn by the Sea

The Inn by the Sea features 57 guest suites and private bungalows, including several where man's best friend can relax in comfort. Visitors who plan to bring along their dogs can expect special treatment for their canine companions, including a pet saloon and spa, at no extra charge. People can spend a full day at the spa, too, or explore all that Southern Maine has to offer, such as fishing, boating or shopping in nearby downtown Portland. The Inn by the Sea participates in several green living initiatives, including maintaining an indigenous garden and boardwalk trails that allow guests to commune with nature without harming it.

The Inn by the Sea is near Portland Harbor, officially in the seaside community of Cape Elizabeth, where a lighthouse nearly two centuries old illuminates the entrance to the harbor.

The Elms Bed & Breakfast

While not a full service resort, as the Portland area has only one, The Elms is a place to relax and be waited on. This bed and breakfast was built as a private home around 1882 and has rooms with antique furnishings overlooking the Presumpscot River. The Elms is just 10 minutes from historic downtown Portland and within easy distance of the city's famous lighthouses, art galleries and, of course, lobster dinners. Breakfast is served in the dining room under the chandelier and on Lenox China, but the innkeepers encourage guests to dress comfortably and enjoy the billiards table, veranda and many fireplaces.

Pomegranate Inn

The Pomegranate Inn is an interesting substitution for a resort. With a concierge who knows a little bit about everything happening in Portland, the Pomegranate Inn is an exclusive hotel with a flair for art and decor. The inn offers specialty in-room cheese-and-cracker trays or chocolate delights served on a slab of Maine granite. And, for a small fee, the concierge can hook you up with a vacation membership to the best health club in the city.
