Located within 25 miles of Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore and many hiking trails, Traverse City attracts many outdoor enthusiasts. Traverse City is home to the TART Trail, a hiking and biking trail that spans the city and connects many different trails. Many hotels are located on the waterfront of Grand Traverse Bay.

The Traverse City Holiday Inn is on West Grand Traverse Bay, with a beach on one side of the hotel, and the TART Trail on the other. It has 179 rooms, many with views of the bay, and all with coffee makers, hair dryers, irons and ironing boards. The hotel has an indoor and an outdoor pool, and an exercise center that includes a sauna and hot tub. For entertainment the hotel has an on-site club and sports bar. Pets are welcome with a per night fee.

The Bayshore Resort is located on the beach on West Grand Traverse Bay with the TART Trail just outside of the front door. The hotel has a free breakfast every morning, free in-room high-speed Internet, a fitness room and an indoor pool and hot tub. Sugar Beach Resort Hotel is located on East Grand Traverse Bay, less than four miles from the North American VASA Trail. The hotel has over 300 feet of beach front with lounging beach chairs.
