Laguna Beach, California Hotels & Resorts

Laguna Beach, California Hotels & Resorts
The community of Laguna Beach, located just over an hour south of Los Angeles and three hours north of San Diego, first attracted artists who painted its scenic vistas from the cliffs and beaches. When the Pacific Coast Highway was extended to reach the art colony in the 1920s, Laguna's population expanded to include a number of artists who lived in the village year-round. Laguna today is home to nearly 25,000 people and welcomes approximately six million visitors each year, according to the Laguna Beach Visitors' Center.

Laguna Riviera

The Laguna Riviera is located on the site of the Brickles house, one of the early residences in the village of Laguna. The multi-story hotel was constructed on the sand in the late 1940s, with additional wings added over the years. The 41-room hotel, which also offers family suites, is located within walking distance of the summer art festivals, restaurants and art galleries. Rooms include high-speed Internet service, private decks and fireplaces. Beachfront rooms offer views (on clear days) to Catalina Island. Some rooms offer kitchenettes and the family suites have full kitchens.

Laguna Surf Resort

The Laguna Surf Resort is a condominium timeshare complex of 25 units that offers public rentals. The corporate office suggests that visitors reserve rooms 21 or more days in advance, but also suggests calling for last-minute cancellations up to the day requested. Rental rates vary by month and by view, with ocean views commanding the highest rates during the months of July and August. The rates in May and June are also higher than other months of the year. A two-night stay is required and individual timeshare owners occasionally rent units in lieu of using the week allotment. These weeks may also be rented from the main office. The front desk is open Saturday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., with Friday hours from 8:30 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. Decor and furnishings vary by unit. The Laguna Surf Resort is within walking distance from local restaurants, downtown art galleries and retail stores.

Hotel Laguna

Hotel Laguna is located on the "California Riviera" in downtown Laguna. The current hotel is located on the site of the wooden hotel that was the first multi-story commercial structure in the village in the 1880s. The current hotel was dedicated in 1930, just in time to house guests traveling down the extension of Pacific Coast Highway. The hotel lounge and rooms on the oceanfront housed people from the film industry, including Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart. The hotel underwent a major renovation in 1985. The hotel now offers 63 rooms and two "mini-suites." Other room services include private beach access, complimentary breakfast and daily newspaper. Beach umbrellas, towels, chaises and surf wait staff are provided to each guest taking advantage of the private sandy beach located directly off the lower level of the hotel. Optional services include massages. Dining is available in the Lounge, The Terrace (open air dining on the hotel balcony), and at the Claes Restaurant.
