Hampton Inn
There are cheaper hotels in Pikeville, but you get a lot for your money at this primo property, located in the heart of downtown. Rooms are huge at this contemporary, spic-and-span hotel, with flat-screen TVs, modern baths (think granite counters, free upscale toiletries and plush towels) and top-notch linens. You'll save on snacks and beverages by using the in-room microwave and mini-refrigerator. There's a complimentary breakfast (with hot items, too) and free parking at the city garage next door. The park behind the hotel is a nice place to stroll, and after a day on the trails, cool down with a plunge in the hotel pool. The average room rate in 2009 is about $110 a night, but be sure to ask about specials and deals.

Stay in the park, with hiking, biking and whitewater rafting at your doorstep. The step-back-in-time rooms are basic with simple furnishings and old-style TVs, but they have great views of the gorge and Russell Fork River. Some even have small balconies. Nearby, there's an outdoor pool (there's a small entrance fee to use the pool), picnic shelters and boat rentals. Cottages, cabins and one suite with a full kitchen are also available. As of 2009, rooms start at $61 a night. Pets are allowed for an additional $7 a night.
