There are several ways to travel by bus from Los Angeles to San Francisco, or "up north," as Californians say. There are offerings ranging from direct round trips to seven-day tours with several stops along the way. Fares and other details are seasonal and subject to change.

Chinatown Bus

For years, East Coasters have relied on Chinatown Bus Co. for budget fares on the East Coast corridor. Now available on the West Coast, it offers daily service between Los Angeles and San Francisco, departing from downtown Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Hollywood, North Hollywood and Union Station. The trip duration is approximately seven hours of mostly freeway driving, with a 15-minute rest stop at the halfway point. Arrival dropoff points in San Francisco are San Francisco Hilton, Bay Fair BART Station, Caltrain station and Powell Station (Metro). Prices start at $19 as of November 2009. The one-way fare is $50 in mid-December. It offers a $5 discount for round trips.
