Historical Hotels in New Zealand

Historical Hotels in New Zealand
Visitors to New Zealand will find a number of historical hotels to stay at, both on the North Island and the South Island. Many of these were built in the late nineteenth century. However, while they all have been restored to their former glory, you can rest assured that they do have many of the modern conveniences we have grown to expect from hotels today.

Cardrona Hotel

The Cardrona Hotel is among New Zealand's oldest. It's situated between Wanaka and Queenstown on the South Island. The Cardrona dates back to New Zealand's gold rush days. It and the general store next door are the only buildings remaining from that era. The hotel features 16 rooms, ranging from ones with single beds to ones with one or more queen-sized beds. Room features include bathrooms, Sky TV and tea- and coffee-making facilities. Breakfast is complimentary and is served at the on-site restaurant.

Other facilities at the hotel include a spa room and a drying room for your ski equipment. The restaurant features a bar with a large variety of wines and beers, perfect for apres ski.

Pen-Y-Bryn Lodge

The Pen-Y-Bryn Lodge is located on New Zealand's South Island, halfway between Christchurch and Queenstown. Dating back to the 1880s, the hotel has been classified by the Historic Places Trust as a site of outstanding historical significance. Among the hotel's many features are the conservatory, the formal gardens and the dining room, which features a fireplace carved in Italy.

Guest rooms feature private bathrooms, and some rooms have their own private terrace or courtyard. The rooms offer fantastic sea and mountain views, and guests may enjoy tea, served in fine china, as well as homemade cookies. Among the many things to do close by is traveling to the Oamaru coast to see the penguins (blues and yellow-eyeds). You could also take a scenic flight from Oamaru to see the spectacular Mount Cook.
