Essex is a small historic town of approximately 700 people in Essex County, New York. The quaint village is surrounded by mountains, lakes and rivers. The majestic peaks of the Adirondack Mountains tower over Essex and neighboring villages and offer many outdoor recreation activities. Nearby Lake Placid was the site of the 1980 Winter Olympics, and snow skiing and other winter sports are popular in the area. Mountain bikers, rock climbers and hikers can also take advantage of the mountain peaks. You can canoe, kayak or whitewater raft the many lakes and rivers. Essex and other towns in Essex County offer a variety of dining options for the active tourist.

Old Dock House

The Old Dock House and Marina has been an Essex tradition for more than a hundred years. The restaurant is next to the Essex ferry dock and offers outdoor seating on Lake Champlain and boat slips. Seafood and steaks are on the menu for dinnertime, along with a variety of appetizers. Sandwiches and salads are served for lunch.

Noels on the Water

Noels on the Water sits on Lake Champlain and is known for its finely prepared seafood. The restaurant opened in 2008, providing competition for The Dock House, and is situated a few blocks from the Essex ferry dock. The restaurant's ambiance is peaceful and unhurried. Noels offers a small wine and beer selection.

The Essex Inn

The historic Essex Inn is on Lake Champlain. The inn has been open for business since 1810, and its stately architecture adds to the charm of Essex's main street. The inn operates as a bed and breakfast but serves breakfast to the public on Sunday mornings. The in-house bakery and pantry serve homemade breads and pastries, eggs and omelettes cooked with fresh herbs from the inn's gardens. The colonial dining rooms provide guests a glimpse of history as they enjoy breakfast. The bakery and pantry also cater special events and are available for special orders.

Turtle Island Cafe

Turtle Island Cafe is in nearby Willsboro, New York, four miles from the Essex ferry dock. The dinner menu changes daily and is largely seafood, steak and chicken. Soups and salads are also available. The restaurant is only open for lunch during the warmer months. It also hosts special events, such as a Thanksgiving Day Buffet, New Year's Day Brunch and a Beach Party.
