Attractions in Cody, Wyoming
Founded in 1896, Cody, Wyoming took its name from Col. William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody. The town is the eastern gateway to Yellowstone National Park, which is about an hour away. Outdoor enthusiasts love the area for the abundant activities available year-round. Cody offers all types of lodging, including camping areas, bed and breakfasts, historic hotels, hostels and motels.

Buffalo Bill State Park

Buffalo Bill State Park features a reservoir nestled under the Absaroka Mountains. The park's facilities are open from May 1 to September 30; some winter camping is available. The lodge and visitor center at the dam in Shoshone Canyon close from October 1 to April 30. Visitors can rent boats, play horseshoes, basketball or volleyball, view wildlife, hike or fish.

Four Bear Mountain

Four Bear Mountain is just outside of Cody. The Four Bear Trail offers a 10-mile, Class 1 roundtrip hike that features beautiful wildflowers in spring and summer. The trail crosses a canal, goes through a small canyon and has numerous switchbacks before it ends at the tree-covered summit.

Buffalo Bill Historical Center

The Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody has five museums. The Buffalo Bill Museum has exhibits about the private and public lives of Buffalo Bill. The Whitney Gallery of Western Art features Western sculptures, prints and paintings by N.C. Wyeth, Thomas Moran and other famous artists. The Plains Indian Museum offers the visitor a look into the lives of the Plains Indians with artifacts, artwork and quilts beginning in 1880. The exhibits include ceremonial clothing and headdresses, teepees and life-sized statues. The Cody Firearms Museum has American and European arms made as early as the sixteenth century. The Draper Museum of Natural History seeks to integrate the humanities and natural science of the West through interactive and immersive exhibits. Special annual events at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center include a Powwow, Summer Institute, Buffalo Bill Invitational Shootout and Holiday Open House. The center has a cafe, gift shop and research library. Admission passes are good for two consecutive days.
