Big Pine Key, Florida Lodging

Big Pine Key, Florida Lodging
Florida's Big Pine Key about 29 miles east of Key West has all of that upscale community's natural splendor without any tourist glitz. Unlike some of the smaller Keys, Big Pine Key has shopping facilities. It also offers the solitude of the National Key Deer Refuge. Outdoor pastimes include diving or snorkeling charters to the Looe Key Reef National Marine Sanctuary and bird watching at the Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuge. Big Pine Key's quaint and comfortable lodging options will make a stay even more memorable.

Old Wooden Bridge Guest Cottages

With a store dating back to 1943 that was the original building of a tourist camp on this site, The Old Wooden Bridge Guest Cottages are as rustically charming as their name. Their namesake, a bridge that once connected Big Pine Key to No Name Key, has long since given way to a concrete replacement. The fishing from the new bridge, however, is as good as it was in the old days.

The 14 cottages sit on more than five acres along the Bogie Channel. The complex has its own fuel dock and marina, with rental kayaks are available for paddles to No Name Key. Each air-conditioned cottage has cable TV and full kitchens with microwave and refrigerator, and an outdoor grill and picnic table. The outdoor pool has views of the marina and Bogie Channel; cottages look across to No Name Key. The store always has plenty of snacks and cold drinks.

Big Pine Key Motel

Close to both the National Key Deer Refuge and Big Pine Key's marinas, the Big Pine Key Motel has 32 air-conditioned efficiencies and apartments, each with cable TV. Guests can bring their boat along and stow it at the separate boat parking lot.

When not out on the water, visitors cool off at the motel's sparkling outdoor pool. If guests display their room key, they receive a nice discount on meals at the restaurant next to the motel. Breakfast featuring pancakes, omelets, or eggs with sausage and bacon are their specialty but the lunches are special as well.

The motel is within 10 minutes of Bahia Honda State Park, where you can bike, kayak, swim, snorkel or experience some of the best tarpon fishing in Florida.

The Barnacle Bed & Breakfast

With its own palm-lined private sand beach, tiki hut, hammocks and hot tub, The Barnacle Bed & Breakfast is an ideal spot to enjoy Big Pine Key's ocean sunsets. Its villa rooms have with full baths, and the separate Blue Heron Cottage as both a kitchen and secluded porch.

The tiki hut's barbecue grill makes outdoor meals even more enjoyable. The high point of a dining experience at the Barnacle, however, will almost certainly come first thing in the morning. Guests enjoy breakfast served in the atrium to the sound of a waterfall splashing gently into a pond. The atrium also features a Jacuzzi.

All accommodations have satellite TV, WiFi, and refrigerators. The lower level Ocean Room has a beach patio, while the two upper rooms open onto the atrium.
