Historical Arizona Hotels

Historical Arizona Hotels
Whether you are in search of adventure, ghosts or wanting to stay where one of the country's most famous criminals hid out, Arizona has a wide variety of historical hotels. After a day of hunting, fishing, golfing or hiking, any of these hotels are close to some of the state's most popular attractions.

Gadsden Hotel

Considered to be "the last of the grand hotels," Gadsden Hotel is located in Douglas, Arizona, the center of the old Wild West and one mile from the Mexican border. First built in 1907 the hotel has been a popular destination for political figures including Eleanor Roosevelt, ranchers, businessmen and movie directors. The National Register of Historic Places named the hotel a National Historic Place in 1976.

Since 1991, several guests and workers have spotted a ghost wandering the halls and rooms of the hotel. This five-story hotel still consists of its original marble staircase, which survived a fire in 1929. The staircase is famous for Pancho Villa who supposedly rode his horse up the stairs before his assassination. After a day of hunting or horseback riding, guests can relax in the hotels tavern and restaurant, The El Conquistador Dining Room.

Rates start at $60 for a room with one double bed and goes up to $150 for a jacuzzi suite. Weekly and monthly rates for Hotel Gadsden are available upon request.

Hotel San Carlos

Located in downtown Phoenix, the Hotel San Carlos is the only boutique hotel still in operation in the city. The hotel sits where Phoenix's first school was built in 1874. In 1916 the lot was bought to make a row of hotels and in 1928 Hotel San Carlos opened. The hotel still has many of the same features as it did 80 years ago including the marble in the lobby and water taps in the guest rooms. Hotel San Carlos is a Historic Hotels of America member.

Reserve a room in one of the five signature suites, each named after a Hollywood star who stayed at the hotel, such as Marilyn Monroe or Spencer Tracey. After visiting the Desert Botanical Garden or the Out of Africa Wildlife Park located minutes from the hotel, relaxing in a two-room suite is the best way to end the day.

Room rates at Hotel San Carlos range from $119 to $149. Rates do change monthly.
