San Diego is famous for its beach scene, where tourists and residents alike congregate to swim, play beach volleyball, body surf and sail. In the surrounding area, hikers can explore public trails and take in views of the mountains and the Pacific Ocean to the west. San Diego has several highly ranked hotels that offer guests beautiful surroundings and premium services.

The Grand Del Mar

This five-star hotel offers its guests a luxury experience in a spectacular setting. Architect Addison Mizner drew inspiration from the monumental hotels of the 1920s, so the lobby has vaulted ceilings and mosaic floors of marble. The in-house restaurant, named "Addison" for the architect, boasts arches, marble floors, a first-rate wine cellar and views of the adjacent Grand Golf Course. A second restaurant, the Clubhouse Grill, is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The hotel has a 21,000-square-foot spa, where guests can have massages in cabanas poolside, a ballroom, meeting rooms and a chapel. Guests can play golf or tennis, swim or hike in nearby Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve. The hotel also has an Explorer's Club, where parents can drop off their kids for supervised nature activities and hikes. The guest rooms are decorated in turn-of-the-century décor, and all have balconies that overlook the golf course. The bathrooms have separate showers and over-sized tubs, and the beds and bedding are premium products. The rooms also have free wireless Internet access and safes large enough to accommodate laptop computers.
