The Business Inn

This apartment building-turned hotel, conveniently located in downtown, is one of the best bargains in Ottawa. Talk about elbow space and amenities. A stay here feels more like crashing in a friend's apartment than staying at a hotel. Rooms are more than 700 square feet, with full kitchens, and separate living, and dining areas. There's also a computer and printer in each room, DVD player, free Wi-Fi, free continental breakfast, and free laundry service. It's a short walk to major attractions, like the Rideau Center, Parliament, and the canal.

Hampton Inn Ottawa

We know it's a predictable, somewhat sterile chain but for the money, you can't beat it. The rooms are huge, with work desks, microwaves, and mini refrigerators, the bathrooms are huge, and everything is spic and span. It's the little things that add up: free hot breakfast, free underground parking, free Wi-Fi. Another nice touch is the free, on-the-go breakfast bags, with muffin, fruit, water and breakfast bar. Pick one up on your way out the door each morning. Only downside to staying here is that it's not directly downtown; you'll need a car for visiting major attractions. Room rates average around $140 a night.

Albert at Bay Suite Hotel

Handy location, spacious suites, and wallet-pleasing prices make this property a popular choice for value-seeking vacationers. You'll have plenty of room to spread your gear in these one and two bedroom apartments, with full well-stocked kitchens, separate living, and dining areas, and balconies overlooking downtown Ottawa. Rooms are decked out with traditional furnishings, neutral colors and dark woods. There's a restaurant and pub on site, fitness center, and guest laundry. After a day of outdoor adventure, hit the sauna or relax on the rooftop patio. It's a 15 minute or so walk to Parliament Hill; there's also a city bus stop in front of the hotel. Avoid street-side rooms as these can be noisy.
