Nestled in the heart of the Finger Lakes region, Cortland, N.Y. is a prime location for any outdoor enthusiast. Cortland's location in the middle of this area makes it an ideal starting point for thorough exploration of the area, no matter the season.

Finger Lakes Trail

The Finger Lakes Trail (FLT) is part of an ongoing effort to provide a footpath across the entire state of New York. It runs from the New York-Pennsylvania border in Allegany State Park to the Long Path in the Catskill Forest Preserve. The 569-mile trail is maintained entirely by volunteers and can be accessed from a number of locations in the Southern Tier of New York. Directions to trail accesses and information on trail conditions as well as information on recommended gear can all be found on the FLT website. There are a number of accesses near Cortland, usually within about 10-15 miles.

Yellow Lantern Kampground

You are free to camp along the Finger Lakes Trail, but Cortland itself also is home to Yellow Lantern Kampground, located along the Tioughnioga River. It is built on an old farmstead and has approximately 240 campsites as well as facilities to make camping family friendly. This includes volleyball and bocce ball courts, horseshoe pits and playgrounds.

Greek Peak and Hope Lake

This mountain resort located only eight miles outside of Cortland is a great place for your winter activities. It offers downhill and cross-country skiing trails of various intensity levels as well as both private and group lessons for those looking to improve their skills. Greek Peak also offers equipment rentals of all types. When the snow melts, a variety of mountain biking and hiking trails become available for your enjoyment. The resort also is accommodating of families, offering amenities such as babysitting and a "ski bowl" designed to help teach children the skills needed to master the slopes.

Allan H. Treman Marine Park

Just 21 miles outside of Cortland lies the city of Ithaca. There, on the tip of Cayuga Lake, you can find the Allan H. Treman Marine Park, which is one of the largest inland marinas in the state of New York. From there you can launch into one of the largest of the Finger Lakes. Pets are welcome, and once in the water, you are free to sail, kayak, canoe, windsurf or engage in whatever other types of watersports you enjoy.
