Cool Bars in Portland, Oregon

Cool Bars in Portland, Oregon
It rains in Portland. A lot. And Portlanders love nothing better than to escape into the many bars lining the city streets, where happy hours are long and the bartenders are strangely sexy and friendly. Here are a few of Portland Oregon's coolest bars, in all their offbeat glory.

Doug Fir Lounge

It's hard to think of a bar that is more uniquely Portland than Southeast's Doug Fir Lounge. With a sleek wooden interior, a Silver moose head and indoor and outdoor fireplaces, the Doug Fir is pure Pacific Northwest. The downstairs hosts some of the top music acts in the city.

East End

The East End is a chic bar in Southeast Portland that offers creative specialty cocktails (try the "East End Fashion" or the "Roxy Roller") and, usually, a loud hip dj. The downstairs half of the bar is a show venue that often showcases local music, always to a very young, well dressed crowd.

Billy Ray's Neighborhood Dive

North Portland's Billy Ray's Neighborhood Dive is so classically dive that it doesn't even have its own name on the front of the building, there's just a neon sign that says "tavern." Billy Ray's has it all: an upstairs game room, an outdoor patio, murals by celebrated Portland artist Charlie Kraft, weekly trivia and cheap, cheap beer and well drinks.

The Pub at the End of the Universe

The Pub at the End of the Universe is special, and no one seems to know why. Located in deep Southeast Portland, the Pub can be a real trek to get to but is well worth the effort. Bizarre hippie paintings, cheap pitchers of beer and delicious, piping hot garlic bread all add to the appeal of this Portland institution.

Shanghai Tunnel

Located in downtown Portland, the Shanghai Tunnel is unusual in that it's underground. This is a cool bar for those that want an out of the ordinary experience. The Shanghai Tunnel serves delicious noodle bowls in addition to stiff drinks, and somehow everything tastes extra good when devoured under the Tunnel's big red paper lanterns.
