The metropolitan area of New Orleans, Louisiana, includes the area roughly from where I-10 crosses Lake Pontchartrain on the east to the western edge of the suburb of Kenner, which ends approximately where I-10 separates from the I-310 loop. Aside from the French Quarter and the historic district, it includes the areas known locally as the East Bank, the West Bank, and the North Shore, which is across the lake from downtown. New Orleans is bordered on the north by Lake Pontchartrain and lies close to Lake Borgne, which empties into the Gulf of Mexico. Aside from the customary pleasures of the city, it is also a haven for enthusiasts of water sports and fishing.
