Famous Hotels in London
London is a city that offers diverse places to explore. These range from ancient archeological sites to modern attractions. Exploring can be done from a canoe on the Thames, on a bike or by hiking. Mixed in among the sites are the jewels of the famous hotels of London. These historical, yet up to date, accommodations were erected in the 1800s and early 1900s. It was a time when Queen Victoria and then King Edward ruled and was an age of elegance associated with English tradition.

Brown's Hotel

Brown's Hotel opened in 1837--the year Queen Victoria became the constitutional monarch of England. Brown's Hotel is situated near theaters and the upscale shopping of Bond Street. It has 29 suites, 11 townhouses and 117 bedrooms, three spa treatment rooms, a gym and six meeting rooms that hold 120 people. It also has a restaurant called the Albemarle and a tea room called the English tea room, which is considered one of the best tea rooms in London.

Langham Hotel

Langham Hotel opened its doors to customers in 1865, and in 1879 became equipped with electricity. Today it has 380 rooms. It has a 16 meter swimming pool, a health club, a dining room, bar and lounge. Famous people who stayed at Langham include Mark Twain, Arthur Conan Doyle, Haile Salassie, Arturo Toscanini and Napoleon the Third.

The Savoy

The Savoy, located on the Strand, opened in the 1889, the same year that the Eiffel Towel was opened. It was designed by Thomas Edward Collcutt, on the site of the House of Savoy which burned down in 1864. It has 260 rooms, health facilities (including exercise equipment and a pool), cafes, bars and restaurants, including the Thames Foyer and the Savoy Restaurant (where Melba toast was created.) Famous people including painters such as Monet and Whistler, bands including U2, Led Zepplin, The Who and The Beatles, and actors such as Laurence Olivier, Judy Garland, Vivian Leigh, Julie Andrews and Marilyn Monroe have stayed here.

The Connaught

The Connaught was originally another part of another hotel line, it was reopened in 1897 and named the Coburg Hotel after Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg. It was renamed the Connaught Hotel in 1917, after Queen Victoria's third son who was the first Duke of Connaught. A hotel of 92 rooms, the Connaught dining at the Coburg Bar, the Connaught Bar, the Esplette and Helene Darroze and the Connaught. Also offered are meeting rooms, a spa and fitness center.

Claridge's

Claridge's is located in Mayfair and opened in 1812. The hotel contains 203 rooms, and offers ballrooms, fitness equipment and a currency exchange. Its dining offers Gordon Ramsay at Claridge's, The Reading Room, Claridge's Bar and the Foyer. Claridge's serves afternoon tea, and beginning in 2007, a menu which offers different types of water.

One of the most famous people to visit Claridge's was Empress Eugenie, who came to England to visit Queen Victoria. Other famous people who have stayed at Claridge's include Brad Pitt, Mariah Carey, U2 and McJagger.

The Ritz London

The Ritz London is located in Piccadilly and contains 137 rooms. It opened May 24, 1906. Famous people who stayed at the Ritz include Queen Elizabeth II, Judy Garland, Charles de Gaulle and Winston Churchill. The Ritz has a casino in its basement called the Ritz Club. Its dining options include the Palm Court, The Ritz Restaurant, a bar named the Rivoli bar with six private dining rooms.

The Dorchester

In 1929 two men, Sir Frances Towle and Sir Malcolm McAlpine bought the Dorchester House in Mayfair, London and demolished it to have the Dorchester Hotel built. Approximately three years later, on April 18, 1931 the Dorchester Hotel opened. As of 1996, the Dorchester became a part of the worldwide group of seven luxury hotels, called the Dorchester collection.

The Dorchester's dining options include China Tang, The Promenade, The Grill, the Alain Ducasse and The Bar at the Dorchester. Also offered are a spa and florist.

Since its opening famous people have roomed at the Dorchester from writers such as T.S. Eliot and politicians such as Dwight D. Eisenhower and Winston Churchill, to singers, musicians and actors such as Duke Ellington, Johnny Depp, The Beatles Tom Cruise, Julie Andrews, Warren Beatty, Elizabeth Taylor, Charlton Heston and Nicole Kidman.
