San Jose International Airport
The San Jose International Airport, or Juan Santamaria International Airport, handles most arrivals from the United States and other nations, as well as some domestic flights. A private company manages the Juan Santamaria that welcomes airlines like United, Delta Air Lines, British Airways, Continental and Mexicana. The airport is located near downtown San Jose and only a mile from the town of Alajuela. Locals hold an annual Mango Festival in Alajuela with parades and food stalls.
Liberia International Airport
The Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport in Liberia is a full service airport with luggage handling services, a bank and snack bar. This airport lies on the north pacific coast of Costa Rica in the province of Guanacaste. With a runway that can queue four planes at a time, the Liberia International Airport has become a busy hub for flights to destinations like Tamarindo and Samara. The Santa Rosa National Park attracts surfers for its beaches, but hikers can enjoy trails to waterfalls and forests.
Limon Domestic Airport
The airport at Limon, on the southern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, offers daily domestic flights to Pavas and Tortuguero on Nature Air. Limon's runway became paved in 2004, however the airport only consists of an airstrip and concrete building. The nearby Playa Bonita is a popular surfing destination. Cahuita National Park protects the coastline coral reef while offering snorkeling and underwater diving attractions. Visitors may go hiking and camp within certain areas of the 1067-hectare park.
Pavas Domestic Airport
This airport, also called Tobias Bolanos Airport, stands in the Pavas suburb of San Jose. Nature Air provides domestic commercial flights, though the airport also serves international charter planes and small aircraft from neighboring countries such as Panama and Nicaragua. The Tobias Bolanos Airport is four miles away from the San Jose International Airport and a convenient destination for hotels and restaurants outside the traffic of downtown San Jose.
Quepos Domestic Airport
The Quepos Domestic Airport serves North Puntarenas and the central pacific coast of Costa Rica. Six daily SANSA flights arrive from the San Jose International Airport while four more daily Nature Air planes travel from the Pavas Domestic Airport. The nearby city of Quepos is a popular destination for sport fishing. The peak fishing season coincides with the preferable tourist season in the dry months between January and April. Anglers can hope to catch marlin, wahoo and sailfish.
