Out of the Way Steak Houses in Kansas

Kansas is known for Toto, Dorothy and the production of wheat. But not everyone knows that Kansas has a hidden treasure trove of steak houses that serve melt-in-your-mouth tender, and frequently local, beef. These steaks are well worth a venture off the beaten path.

Scotch and Sirloin

Tucked away behind a butcher shop just off the highway in Wichita, Kansas, this steak house has an old-school, Rat Pack atmosphere, complete with tender prime rib and waitresses in short skirts. Scotch and Sirloin serves only Sterling Silver USDA premium beef. Reservations are recommended at this south central Kansas eatery.

Casey's Cowtown Club Steakhouse

Rustic atmosphere and tender aged beef are the hallmarks of the Dodge City Cowtown Steakhouse. A little hard to find (better take a map) but well worth a wrong turn or two in western Kansas to find aged, charcoal-grilled steaks. Ask the owner, Casey, for a tour and a glimpse of the Willie Nelson shrine. Reservations not generally needed.

Puffy's Steak & Ice House

Located just 15 minutes west of Topeka, in Maple Hill, Kan., Puffy's has been voted "Best Steakhouse in Northeast Kansas" for 16 years. Large but not pretentious, this northeast Kansas restaurant is known for home cooking and a monstrous 20 oz. Porterhouse. Reservations only needed for events and large parties.

Jim's Steak House

Fans of this steak house come from as far away as Kansas City and have been filling its tables for more than 50 years. Known in southeastern Kansas for well-priced and beautifully cooked steaks since 1938, the family at Jim's in Pittsburg cuts their own steaks. Reservations are accepted.
