Attractions Near Galena, Illinois
Galena, Illinois, is 175 miles west of Chicago, Illinois, and 13 miles east of Dubuque, Iowa, and the Mississippi River. For those interested in history, there is a reconstruction of an 1830's fort as well as historic 19th-century homes. For wine lovers, there are a number of tours of local wineries.

Apple River Fort State Historic Site

The Apple River Fort State Historic Site features a reconstruction of an 1832 Blackhawk War Era fort located in Elizabeth, Illinois, approximately 20 minutes from Galena. The fort has different programs and events throughout the year. Although open year-round, the site is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, as well as on Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Historic Buildings

Galena boasts a number of historic homes, the most prominent being that of President Ulysses S. Grant. The home was built for Grant by Republican supporters in 1865. It is located at 500 Bouthillier Street.

Another prominent political figure who lived in Galena was Congressman Elihu B. Washburne. Washburne was a founding member of the Republican Party and strong supporter and confidant of Presidents Lincoln and Grant. This 1845 house located at 908 Third Street is built in the popular 19th-century Greek Revival style.

The Old Market House located at 123 N. Commerce Street was completed in 1846 and now serves as the Information Center run by the Galena-Jo Daviess County Convention and Visitors Bureau. The Greek Revival-style building served as the central marketplace for Galena until 1910. The building was also used for municipal governmental activities including the local jail and a fire company.

Wine Tours

Iowa Wine Tours, Inc., offers small group wine tours of the Upper Mississippi Valley Wine Region. The tour begins with your being picked up at your bed and breakfast, hotel or remote location. The tours of the wineries and vineyards include facility visits, tastings and on-site shopping. Lunch is provided on all tours. As you ride along, you will have views of the Mississippi River and rolling hills and valleys of three states--Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin. The 3- to 5-hour tours range in price from $50 to $70 per person and are designed to accommodate 2 to 12 persons.
