Flying Horse Restaurant & Bar

If you are spending time in Galena, Ill., visiting Apple Canyon State Park or the local historic sites such as President Ulysses Grant's home, the Flying Horse Restaurant & Bar offers a casual fine dining experience. The steak choices range from a 6-ounce petit filet mignon to a 22-ounce porterhouse. If you like sweet potatoes, you might want to try the rum sweet potatoes--mashed sweet potatoes combined with brown sugar, dark rum, butter and pecans. Fridays there is a surf-and-turf special. The Saturday feature is prime rib.

Located on the grounds of the Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa, the Woodlands Restaurant & Lounge offers certified angus beef steaks. The steaks range in size from the 7-ounce petit filet to the 16-ounce rib-eye. The Woodlands also offers fresh seafood. Alexander's Steakhouse

Many steakhouses allow you to pick your own steak. Alexander's let's you cook your own steak in the restaurant's large cooking pits. Of course, there is also the option to have the chef do the cooking for you. Along with the fine steaks, there is an all-you-can-eat baked potato, Texas toast and salad bar. The included salad bar has 45 choices of assorted fruits and vegetables. Homemade dressings make a perfect salad topping. For dessert there is the house specialty, the Skillet Cookie, a freshly made skillet-sized chocolate chip creation topped with ice cream, hot fudge, whipped cream and toasted almonds. There are three other Alexander's Steakhouses--in Springfield, Normal and Champaign, Ill.

Blackhawk Steak Pit

A little more than eight miles from White Pines Forest State Park and located across the Rock River from Lowden State Park is the Blackhawk Steak Pit in Oregon, Ill. Steaks at the Blackhawk are prepared on an open charcoal grill. You will find the full range of steaks from filet mignon to porterhouse. Steaks come with salad bar and a choice of baked potato or rice pilaf.
