Mt. Charleston Hotels and Cabins

Mt. Charleston Hotels and Cabins
If visitors to Las Vegas were to gamble on there not being high-altitude adventure and snow within a 30-minute drive of the Las Vegas strip, they would lose. Mt. Charleston is just 35 miles from Las Vegas but tops out at an elevation of 11,918 feet and offers outdoor enthusiasts not just great recreation but temperatures that average 20 to 30 degrees cooler than the desert floor.

During the winter months, Mt. Charleston and the Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort offer great downhill runs and hiking trails allow for snowshoeing and some limited cross-country skiing. During the summer, the mountain---actually part of the Humboldt Toiyabe National Forest---offers hundreds of miles of hiking and backpacking trails (some open to horses and mountain bikes) and limestone crags provide ideal rock-climbing opportunities.

Mt. Charleston Lodge

Located at 7700 feet and within the Humboldt Toiyabe National Forest, the Mt. Charleston Lodge lies at the very end of the paved road up the mountain. The Lodge offers 23 individual A-frame log cabins for overnight guests and within the main lodge---a historic structure---there is a restaurant that provides restaurant dining for day guests and overnight guests alike.

Cabins vary in size but all come with a propane fireplace, whirlpool tub, refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker. Each cabin also offers an outdoor patio or balcony but does not provide television, Internet or in-cabin telephones.

Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest

What locals refer to as Mt. Charleston the U.S. Forest Service recognizes as the Spring Mountains Recreation Area, a 316,000-acre wilderness area that offers summer and winter outdoor recreation. For those who would rather camp or use an RV or trailer for their visit up Mt. Charleston, the recreation area offers seven developed campgrounds that can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs provided they fit within each designated site (or combined site) area.

Almost all sites offer picnic tables and fire rings or grates and there is potable water at each campground. There are also toilet facilities at each site and stays are restricted to fourteen days or less. Reservations are recommended and while camping is allowed from May through September, campsite closures outside of those dates can occur due to weather.
