Greek Restaurants in Portland, Maine

Greek Restaurants in Portland, Maine
A rumor that Portland is second only to San Francisco in restaurants per capita has been circulated and published by numerous sources. It is unknown whether there is any truth to this rumor, however that doesn't discount the fact that there are many diverse, excellent restaurants. The three major Greek restaurants in the city are no exception to the quality of Portland's dining options.

Acropolis

Located on Forest Avenue, Acropolis is an excellent option for cheaply priced Greek food. It's away from the busy downtown, so navigating to the restaurant and parking won't be as difficult as the other restaurants. The location is nearby a few local walking trails including the 239 acre Evergreen Cemetery, 3.5 mile Back Cove Trail, and the 3/4 mile Baxter Woods Trail and Dog Park.

The menu offers standard Greek fare such as spanikopita, mousaka, gemista, and souvlaki. As of November 2009, the price of an entree is listed at $5.95 for lunch and $10.95 for dinner. The restaurant has a very casual atmosphere and is a perfect place to stop by for a quick Greek dining experience.

Emilitsa

Emilitsa is located on Congress St. in the Portland Arts District. The restaurant is on the outskirts of Portland's historic Old Port, where you can find many art galleries, boutiques and cafes. The restaurant is just under a mile away from the 2.1 mile Eastern Promenade Trail, which runs alongside the Atlantic Ocean and leads to the East End Beach.

Open exclusively for dinner, the restaurant offers Greek Rustic fare in a contemporary and casual atmosphere. The cuisine covers all regions of Greece and features as many local, organic, fresh and natural ingredients available to them. The cost of entrees range between $18 and $35.

Street and Company

Located on a cobblestone street in the Old Port, Street and Company is right in the heart of Portland. There is plenty of night life around this restaurant with neighboring clubs, pubs and wine bars. The ferry to the local islands is also around the corner, where you can travel to Peaks Island and walk the 4 mile Peaks Island Loop.

Street and Company boasts "very fresh seafood." They offer a rustic atmosphere and Mediterranean flavors where less is more. Their menu is highly seasonal and is frequently changed, so it is best to visit their website to see what they will be serving. Dress for the restaurant is on the dressy end of casual. It's recommended to call ahead for a reservation. Entrees tend to range between $16 and $42.
