Indian Restaurants in Louisville, Kentucky

Indian Restaurants in Louisville, Kentucky
Louisville, Kentucky is a great place for nature lovers, with the beautiful trails of Bernheim Forest and the fossil flats of the Ohio River near the dam. But it's also a town with a secret: some of the best and most varied cuisine you'll find in a city this size, with more vegetarian and vegan options than any Southern city has a right to offer. Among their best are several Indian restaurants, with buffet options at some to please the hungriest hiker.

Shalimar Indian Restaurant

Shalimar occupies an unprepossessing storefront in a busy shopping area, and has no atmosphere whatsoever. Don't let that stop you. The food is outstanding, with wonderful Indian breads, and there are plenty of vegetarian and a few vegan options. The best time to go is during lunch, when they offer a buffet with hot curries, excellent jasmine rice, and several salads and desserts. Check local free papers like LEO and Val-Pak online for a discount coupon, which they frequently run. And if you need to check email, ask the server about the free wireless they provide but do not advertise.

Kashmir Indian Restaurant

Located on the eclectic, fun Bardstown Road, Kashmir's red carpet leads you into a tiny piece of India. Authentic but relaxed decor and sitar music accompany your excellent Indian food, served by often-busy staff in tight quarters. The na'an bread here is the best in town, and the Turkish tea is thick and perfect. This is one of the spicier Indian places in town, so be careful what you order; if you feel really brave, they'll make it for you "home-style" as well. A small lunch buffet is offered, but it's really the dinner you should go for. Definitely eat outside on nice days, as the people-watching on Bardstown Road is outstanding. Parking is tight, but you can park across the street at the Mid-City Mall (back and front lots), or ride your bicycle instead to this bike-friendly area.

Ramsi's Cafe on the World

It looks like a hole in the wall on Bardstown Road, but Ramsi's is really one of Louisville's best-kept secrets. The owner Ramsi serves cuisines from all over the world, with a focus on Mediterranean and Indian fusion dishes. With plenty of vegetarian and vegan dishes, a buffet option, Sunday brunch, late night hours, and entertainment, it's no wonder Ramsi's is frequently packed, with people waiting outside. The restaurant caters to a laid-back crowd and has a bike rack right out front. Ramsi's is parking challenged but fortunately is right across the street from Mid-City Mall. There is also a church nearby, directly across from the Mid-City Mall traffic light, with public parking on non-worship days.
