Henderson, Las Vegas, is the happy medium between "Viva Las Vegas!" and "Let's go rock climbing." Located a few miles away from McCarren Airport and the Las Vegas Strip, Henderson offers outdoor activities for the day and casino gambling for the night. Prevention magazine recently rated Henderson as one of the Top Ten Best Walking Cities in America. Henderson has more than 37 miles of trails as well as Nevada's only bird nature preserve.

Lake Las Vegas and Henderson Attractions

Ice skating is something you wouldn't associate with the desert, but the MonteLago Village Resort at Lake Las Vegas offers a floating ice rink. Skate from November through February, seven days a week. Call for times of operation, reservations and skate rentals at (888) 387-1234.

Lake Las Vegas

Go to Lake Las Vegas' 320-acre lake for fishing, sailing, kayaking and swimming. Walk, hike or bike around 10 miles of shoreline. Miles of trails are located around the lake that lead into the desert hills. Go to the MonteLago Village Dockhouse to rent sailboats, electra-crafts and kayaks. Fly-fishing excursions for bass, bluegill and trout are available from the Outdoor Source, operated by master guide John Campbell.

Henderson Bird Preserve

The Henderson Bird Preserve is home to almost 200 species of birds, including waterfowl, wading birds and birds of prey. It is on 147 acres of wetlands, lagoons and ponds. Hike the mapped trails to find several observation stations with benches and interpretive signs. Attend a bird watching class (age ranges from preschool to seniors).

Attractions Near Henderson

Travel to the Lake Mead Recreation Area for boating, swimming, sunbathing and fishing. Lake Mead's desert area is the place for hikers, wildlife photographers and camping. Visit the Lake Mead Visitor Center for information, located 4 miles northeast of Boulder City, Nevada at U.S. Highway 93 and Lakeshore Scenic Drive.

River Mountains Loop Trail

Visit the River Mountains Loop Trail, a non-motorized trail that provides outdoor fanatics the beautiful vistas of the Mojave Desert. It is 35 miles long and surrounds the River Mountains, connecting Henderson with Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Hoover Dam, Boulder City and the rest of the Las Vegas Valley. The trails are 24 feet wide, including a 12-foot paved trail for hikers and road cyclists, a second trail for horse riders and a third trail for mountain bikers.
