Experience History
Cultural and anthropological tourists have been visiting Guatemala for decades. Known as the birthplace of the Mayan empire, Guatemala is home to towering ruins, delicate artifacts and other remnants of times past. Tikal and Flores are popular cities to stay in when planning a visit to The Tikal National Park, home of the Tikal ruins and the Temple of the Two Headed Snake, one of five looming towers located there. Visiting The Tikal National Park is as easy as booking airfare to Flores, Guatemala and staying at one of the area's local hotels. A comprehensive list of accommodations can be found at http://www.sailing-diving-guatemala.com/hotels/index-tikal-flores.htm. The park is open from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily and has an entrance fee of $20. Although the park does not have an official web site, Eco Adventure is a helpful resource.

Volunteer
Volunteerism is one of the most budgetary, and socially, conscious things you can do while on vacation. It's also one of the better ways to experience true immersion in a culture, by staying in a local home, eating local food and working with locals on a daily basis. Institute for Field Research Expeditions (IFRE) offers volunteerism packages that include Spanish classes, 20 hours a week for up to three months, lodging and meals. Even better, IFRE is a 501(c) charitable organization, so your trip is tax deductible.
For more information on Guatemala volunteerism-based travel, contact IFRE.
