Located 31 miles north of Midtown Manhattan in New York City, the village of Pleasantville was settled in 1695 and today is home to 7,000 residents. Formerly known as "Clark's Corners," Pleasantville was a stop along the Underground Railroad. Explore the rolling hills of Westchester County at the Rockefeller State Park Reserve just more than three miles southwest of Pleasantville. Other nearby areas for hiking and biking include Pocantico Lake County Park and Wildlife Park. As its name implies, Pleasantville is a quaint community with lovely scenery. When you've worked up an appetite on the trails, sample some of the local cuisine.

Iron Horse Grill

You'll find this intimate restaurant in a converted, turn-of-the-century train station. Iron Horse Grill received an "Excellent" rating from The New York Times, an "A" from the Journal News and, in a Zagat Survey, the food was described as "extraordinary to perfection." The restaurant serves contemporary cuisine, including first courses like seared scallops, roast butternut squash ravioletti and tricolor salad with calamari. Main courses include breast of duck, filet mignon, broiled cod and grilled veal chop. Top off your meal with desserts like pumpkin creme brulee, Granny Smith cobbler or chocolate marquis; all desserts are $8.50, as of November 2009. First courses range in price from $9 to $16 and main courses run from $26 to $30. You can order the three-course special for $49 or the five-course tasting menu for $69. For vegetarians, there are salads and an assortment of Hudson Valley cheeses. The Iron Horse Grill opens for dinner at 5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and is available for private parties at other times; the private dining room seats up to 16.

A'Mangiare Italian Gourmet

Enjoy a wide variety of Italian cuisine, freshly made at this Pleasantville eatery. A'Mangiare has appetizers like hot antipasto, mussels marinara and stuffed mushrooms. Try one of its many pizza options, including Sicilian style, and specialties such as pesto, margharitta and Cajun chicken pizza. There are hero sandwiches, including meatball, sausage and peppers, chicken parmigiana and tuna fish. A'Mangiare also has pizza rolls, pastas and entrees like chicken cacciatore, eggplant parmigiana, veal piccata and shrimp scampi. Try homemade desserts, including tiramisu, Italian cheesecake and cannoli. Relax after dinner with a cappuccino or espresso. As of November 2009, appetizers range in price from $3.95 to $13.95, hero sandwiches from $6.95 to $9.50, pasta dishes from $9.95 to $23.95 and entrees from $11.95 to $19.95. Get pizza by the slice or a whole pie; small pizzas are $13 to $20 and the large size ranges from $15 to $22.50. There are soups, salads, pastas and vegetable pizza for vegetarians.

Michael's Old Village Tavern

A common hangout for Pleasantville residents and a family-friendly restaurant, Michael's has been a community favorite since the 1970s. The restaurant's diverse menu features traditional pub appetizers like buffalo wings, nachos and chili. For lunch, try a black angus burger, a wrap or overstuffed sandwich, or one of the daily lunch specials such as meatloaf on Wednesdays or clam strips on Fridays. Michael's dinner menu includes all the lunch options, plus entrees like New York strip steak, penne Alfredo, and hibachi salmon. For the vegetarian, try one of Michael's many salads or a veggie burger, salad wrap or pasta dish. As for good times, Michael's has been voted "Best Entertainment," "Best 20-Something Bar" and "Favorite Spot to Feel Like you are in College Again" by readers of Best of Westchester Magazine. Michael's has live bands, beer pong, karaoke, dodge ball and a mechanical bull. There are drink specials and late night pub prices. Michael's is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week, and it caters.
