Gear for Fall Smoky Mountain Hiking

Gear for Fall Smoky Mountain Hiking
Backpacking in the Smoky Mountains in the fall is absolutely breathtaking. To be on the ground level, looking up at the rainbow of color that autumn brings to the trees is simply wonderful. The drawback to the surrounding beauty of the season is the extreme weather. As autumn progresses, nighttime temperatures can plummet while daytime temperatures remain mild and pleasant. Being prepared with the appropriate gear is crucial to the success of backpacking in the Smoky Mountains.

Function

To have a successful excursion, you will need a tent that is lightweight. Choose a tent that is 4 lbs. or less and can easily be tucked away into your backpack. An appropriate sleeping bag for camping in the Smoky Mountains is one that is insulated to keep you warm in subzero temperatures. Mummy bags are great insulators, if you do not mind being unable to move.

Even the most experienced hikers will tell you that blisters are to be expected when embarking on an extended hike. It is best that you purchase hiking boots that fit your feet properly. It is not necessary to buy waterproof hiking boots, but it is a good idea to do so. You never know what conditions you will be forced to walk through.

Significance

When purchasing gear to take with you on a hike through the Smoky Mountains, remember that every ounce of weight will matter when you are toting your backpack over your shoulders. Do your best to limit your gear (including the backpack) to 20 lbs. or less. For example, if your backpack weighs 4 lbs. while empty, the tent weighs 4 lbs. and the sleeping bag weighs 3 lbs., you are already carrying 11 lbs. before you tuck in extra clothes and food.

Time Frame

If you plan a short hike, instead of weighing down your backpack with food, pack a variety of nuts and protein bars. If you snack regularly, you will maintain your energy level and not be tempted to eat a heavy meal. If you backpack for several days and nights, consider packing easy-to-use, prepackaged camping food, instant oatmeal and water.

Prevention/Solution

Always pack a first-aid kit, complete with treatments for blisters. One way to avoid blisters is to change into dry socks if your feet get wet. If you notice a blister begin to form, take care of it immediately.

Benefits

There are benefits to backpacking in the fall. Not only is the scenery gorgeous, but you will also find that you are able to walk further when the hot summer sun is not draining your energy. Backpacking in the autumn months will also give you a break from pesky mosquitoes, ticks, chiggers and snakes.
