Two major rivers, the Missouri and the Mississippi, border the great state of Iowa making it a haven for water lovers everywhere. If you feel like staying on land, trek along one of the 400 miles of trails including the Lewis and Clark Trail. Every year cyclists flock to this Midwest state to participate in the longest bicycling event in the country, also known as RAGBRAI. After the long ride, treat yourself to a hearty meal at one of the many fantastic steakhouses in Iowa.

Joseph's Steakhouse

At Joseph's Steakhouse, enjoy a glass of wine from the extensive menu or try one of the signature cocktails from this upscale eatery's bar. All the steak is organically fed Angus beef. It also uses free range natural chicken and the seafood is flown in regularly. Start off with an appetizer like the seared yellow fin tuna or lobster spring rolls, or add to your steak with a side like potato lyonaisse. Steak cuts include beef tenderloin, New York strip, rib eye, and a 24-ounce porterhouse. All steak options are topped with a red wine demi-glace. Other toppings include bearnaise sauce, hollandaise sauce, melted Maytag bleu cheese, and peppercrust. The mid-range steak prices vary between $20 to $32. Located downtown, this is a great spot to dress up and treat yourself after an intense bike ride. Joseph's is only open for dinner starting at 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday.

801 Steak and Chop House

Enjoy a fine dining experience in Des Moines at the award-winning 801 Steak and Chop House. The restaurant serves USDA prime steaks from Stock Yards. A 2008 winner of the Wine Spectator's Award of Excellence, you shouldn't have any problem pairing a glass with your meal. Steak choices include filet, New York strip, roast prime rib, a 22-ounce bone in Delmonico, and a 24-ounce porterhouse for those particularly famished. Add on fromage or the cognac butter and portabella mushroom ragout to your New York strip, or top the filet with béarnaise sauce. For the non-steak eater, the menu offers fish entrees including Hawaiian nairagi, a shellfish platter, or one of four types of oysters. Vegetables, potatoes, salads, and a full list of appetizers round out the menu. The steak quality is reflected in the cost with prices ranging from $38 to $55. 801 is open for dinner Monday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Sundays from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. (closed at lunch).

Kalmes Restaurant

Kalmes Restaurant is a gem that can be found 15 minutes away from Dubuque in the town of St. Donatus. A Luxembourg -influenced restaurant, Kalmes offers affordable nightly specials and unique options such as the Wiener schnitzel veal and Luxembourg ground steak. The varied menu offers filet and prime rib along with pizza, chicken, pork, sandwiches, and seafood. Dig into either a 14-ounce or 22-ounce T-bone steak. It also serves slow-roasted prime rib with with au jus sauce, a beautifully marbled ribeye, and a top cut 10-ounce sirloin. All steaks can be topped with sautéed onions or mushrooms. Prices are very reasonable with steaks ranging from $12 to $20. Be sure to come early on the weekends, as this place has a reputation for getting crowded. St. Donatus is located right off the Mississippi River and is a quiet spot to explore caves, riverboats, and several mountain resorts. Kalmes is open for lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
