The J.N. (Ding) Darling National Wildlife Refuge is located on Sanibel Island, and in nearby Fort Myers the refuge drive is open for cycling. Cayo Costa State Park in North Fort Myers is accessible only by boat. The park has hiking and biking trails, saltwater fishing, snorkeling and swimming on nine miles of beaches. Sanibel Island has public beaches, and the hotels are set on private beaches. The island also has 27 miles of bike and hiking trails. Many of the hotels on Sanibel Island will be able to supply you with bikes, canoes, kayaks and any other gear you may need.

The Holiday Inn Sanibel Island Hotel is located right on the beach. The hotel has a total of 98 rooms and suites. All of them have private baths, cable TV, mini refrigerators, microwaves, coffee and tea makers, high-speed Internet and free newspaper. The suites also have completely equipped kitchenettes, a sofa bed and dining table. Connecting rooms and cribs are available upon request. Casa Ybel Resort is also right on the water. The hotel has a total of 114 one- and two-bedroom suites with a sleeper sofa, fully equipped kitchen, free coffee and tea, private terrace or balcony, cable TV and DVD and VHS players. The Sanibel Inn is right on the gulf with 96 rooms, suites and condos. The hotel features 600 feet of beach front, a beach bar and a poolside bar, heated outdoor pool, sundeck, kayak rentals, outdoor grills, high-speed Internet and free bikes. Rates in 2009 start at about $118.

West Wind Inn

The West Wind Inn has a total of 103 rooms, some with kitchenettes. Regular rooms have mini refrigerators and microwaves. The kitchenettes have stoves, refrigerators, microwaves, sinks and utensils. All of them have a screened-in balcony. The hotel features tennis courts, heated pool, a kiddie pool, on-site laundry and an on-site restaurant. Amenities include free newspapers, cable, DVD players, coffee makers, cribs, wireless Internet access and free coffee and tea in the lobby. Roll-away beds are available for an extra charge. Rates in 2009 start at about $155.
