Pearl River, New York is located just 20 minutes from the New York metropolitan area. As part of a day that might include shopping at the local malls, boutiques, antique shops, art galleries and open-air organic food markets; cycling in Piermont, hiking at Bear Mountain and Harriman state parks; or golfing at any of the nearby tournament class golf courses; here are three excellent choices for refreshment and replenishment.

Joe and Joe Restaurant

The famous Bronx institution, Joe and Joe Restaurant, has brought its unique brand of Italian homestyle cooking to Pearl River. People come for old-fashioned Italian food and friendly service. Portions are large, cooking is above-average, and the prices are low.‎ Right next to the restaurant is a bar with entertainment, which allows you to have a great night on the town under one roof. It's hard to go wrong with this menu, which features solid performances from the heavy hitters in every Italian food group. Mussels Fra Diavolo or Marinara are heavenly and the broth that it comes with is a bonus. The pastas and entrees come with distinctive sauces that ensure you'll be back. The red snapper filet "marechiara" is always a hit as is the tilapia in season. The wine list draws on solid favorites from California and Italy. Count on paying $17-30 per head plus tip. Parking is available on the street and behind the restaurant building, but you'll need to feed the meter. Dress code is casual; reservations not required.

Kwan Thai Restaurant

Kwan Thai Restaurant in Pearl River brings together a fusion of Thai-Lao cuisine that has been a hit with the local clientele, students, businesspeople and tourists. The restaurant has received glowing reviews in the New York Times as well as in local magazines. The menu is based on two staple foods from the rural Isan province Thailand: larb and green papaya salad. Both of these spicy dishes are eaten with the jasmine rice and are served with crispy herbs and green Thai eggplants. Around this are built various combinations of using chicken, pork and beef, and noodles. Frogs; legs are always a hit, as well as the purple rice pudding for dessert. Appetizers are $5, lunch specials $10, dinner entrees $16-21. The menu is very user-friendly, indicating favorites and spiciness for the uninitiated. Street parking, so bring quarters for the meter. Open Tuesday thru Friday, 11:30 am to 10:00 pm; Saturday, 4:30 pm to 10:30 pm; and Sunday, 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm; closed Monday.

Louie's on the Avenue

Louie's on the Avenue is a period Victorian house that has been remodeled into a restaurant with music, art and instruments adorning the walls. The original atmosphere of the residence has been retained, with the much smaller residential rooms functioning as five separate dining areas offering a degree of intimacy that is perfect for small groups and gatherings. The layout makes the best use of direct and indirect lighting for a warm, inviting dining experience. The menu is contemporary American, and features solid offerings in fish, poultry, beef and pasta offerings. Favorites here are the rack of lamb with merlot sauce and the New York strip steak with crispy onions. Visitors can expect to pay between $25 and $50, plus tip. Reservations are suggested as space is limited.
