German Restaurants in Central Pennsylvania

German Restaurants in Central Pennsylvania
Central Pennsylvania, or Pennsylvania Dutch country, has a strong German heritage. The "Dutch" in the nickname actually derives from Deutsch, or German, the language spoken by many early residents. Despite the strong influence on the community, there are only a handful of restaurants that serve traditional German food.

Hofbrauhas

The Hofbrauhas Pub & Eatery in Abbottstown dates to 1958, but the property goes back even further. The land was once owned by town founder John Abbott. Menu highlights include Bavarian-style schnitzel and an assortment of wursts. Pair your meal with some fine German wines or beers, including several weiss beers.

The Brick Haus

In the middle of Harrisburg's Restaurant Row lies The Brick Haus. The friendly pub, just a few blocks from the Susquehanna River, has a menu with many traditional German favorites, including Bavarian goulash, various sausages and the house specialty, Mad Gerdes chicken sandwich. A variety of international beers and local microbrews complement the food.

Old New York

The owners of the former Schnitzels in Bellefonte (which tragically burned down in 2006), opened Old New York in State College, Pennsylvania. The menu is designed as a tribute to the "olde" neighborhoods of New York. Authentic German fare includes an outstanding selection of brats and schnitzels.

Herwig's Austrian Bistro

Herwig's in State College is Austrian, not German, but the cuisine of the two neighboring countries is similar. Herwig's has a reputation for high quality and was rated the top ethnic restaurant in the area three consecutive years by readers of State College Magazine. To maintain freshness, the menu at the BYOB establishment changes regularly depending on what's available, but regular features include Weinerschnitzel (traditional pan-fried pork dish), Geschnetzeltes (pork or veal with mushrooms, sour cream and dill sauce), Zwiebelrostbraten (thinly sliced New York strip with caramelized onions) and many assortment platters.
