Christopher Morley Park is close by. The park has a one-mile fitness trail, a par-30 golf course, tennis courts and an outdoor Olympic-size pool, and there's cross country skiing in the winter.

The Heart of Portugal is an authentic Portuguese restaurant in the heart of Mineola. Try the Camarao Grelhado em molho de limao e cognac appetizer--grilled shrimp with lemon and cognac. Main dishes include the pan-seared salt cod grilled with olive oil and roasted potatoes in the style of Lagareiro. The ambiance is casual and bright.

Churrasqueira Bairrada is a Portuguese barbecue restaurant. All the meats and fish are charcoal grilled and brought to the table, where they are sliced to order. You can order rodizio style, where skewers of everything are brought to the table and sliced onto your plate for as long as you wish, or a la carte. Some excellent entrees are the squid and shrimp kebab, and the grilled codfish. The restaurant is small and becomes crowded. Enjoy a pitcher of sangria while waiting for a table.

Lareira Restaurant

Lareira is a Portuguese restaurant in the heart of Mineola. It is a casual, neighborhood restaurant enjoyed by the locals. Camarão Grelhado, grilled tiger shrimp with lemon and cognac, is an excellent appetizer. A signature entree is the Sardinhas Assadas, made with grilled whole sardines. There is a Spanish guitar player on weekends, strumming melodies reminiscent of Portugal.
