Colorado is famous for its 26 ski and snowboard areas. Add in thousands of hiking and biking trails spread across national parks and forests, as well as state parks and wilderness area, and the state may well be an outdoor recreational paradise. If you're in the mood for German food, work up a good appetite with your favorite outdoor sport, then head for one of these restaurants to indulge your craving.

Helga's German Restaurant & Deli

Whether you want to eat in or grab the makings for a picnic, Helga's offers a wide selection of German meats, cheeses and breads. Try one of several different homemade schnitzels, bratwursts and other popular German dishes for lunch or dinner, along with a glass of German beer. Save room for dessert--choose from a variety of homemade tortes, cheesecakes, and apple or cherry strudel. If you like schnitzel, there's an "all you can eat" offer on Mondays. As you're leaving, stop at the gift store for European chocolates, candy, music and magazines. While you're in the neighborhood, check out Cherry Creek Lake by driving south on Highway 225. It offers great fishing, especially for walleye.

Edelweiss German Restaurant

Located south of Colorado Springs, this beautifully decorated restaurant has strolling musicians on weekends, and unforgettable desserts. Three fireplaces make dining warm and intimate, while the menu features traditional German fare as well as other European-inspired dishes. Try schnitzel, bratwurst or sauerbraten for lunch and dinner. Or splurge and order a flammekueche--a dish resembling a thin-crust pizza stacked with onions, bacon and quark cheese. Take a look at the beer menu, which is full of German brews. Grab a home-baked dessert to go if you feel too full after dinner.

Andrea's Homestead Cafe

This restaurant, sitting on the road leading to the east entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park, boasts more than three decades of success. Locals and out-of-towners stop in for homemade German food Thursdays through Mondays. Try the tasty pork roast Falkenstein, or get a little of everything with the German platter featuring pork, bratwurst and a smoked pork chop. The cafe also offers American fare, such as burgers and a sandwiches. Save room for the warm apple strudel, made fresh in the cafe's bakery. Or get some baked goods to go, and enjoy them on the trail.
