Deutschtown, a national historic district, preserves a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania neighborhood that was populated by primarily German-born immigrants at the turn of 20th century. The Deutschtown neighborhood is where a few of Pittsburgh's best-known German restaurants are located, and additional ones are not far away.

Penn Brewery

Penn Brewery, an authentic German restaurant and brewery, was the first craft brewery in Pennsylvania. It hosts an annual Oktoberfest celebration the last two weekends of September. German food, drink, and entertainment highlight the annual celebration.

Millvale Allegheny Park is located close to the Penn Brewery. Kayak and canoe rentals are available at the park for paddling along the 30-mile Three Rivers Water Trail. A bike and walking path runs parallel to the Allegheny River to North Shore neighborhood.

Max's Allegheny Tavern

Max's Allegheny Tavern has a unique history that includes its operation as a speakeasy during the prohibition of the 1920's. The turn-of-the-century restaurant and bar has gone through extensive restoration. The restaurant and bar serves sausages, Schnitzels and other German favorites. Max's offers an extensive beer selection, including several German brews.

Allegheny Commons Park is a short walk from Max's. The park has been part of Pittsburgh's North Shore for over 130 years. Paved walkways allow for serene nature hikes through over a dozen different tree species. Flat water kayaking rental is available on the northwest side of the park on Lake Elizabeth. Baseball and softball fields, basketball and tennis courts, and a swimming pool are on the grounds of Allegheny Commons.

Hofbräuhaus Pittsburgh

Located in the Southside Works, the Hofbräuhaus Pittsburgh opened its doors in March 2009. The German-style bier hall brews its lager on-site. The Hofbräuhaus serves German-style appetizers, entrees and desserts.

Pittsburgh has over 700 sets of steps throughout the city. The Southside neighborhood has 68 sets of steps. In the fall, Pittsburgh StepTrek annually commemorates the massive amount of steps in the city. Event participants choose from two courses in the Southside area.

Barley's & Hop's Beer Cafe and Bottle Shop

Barley's & Hop's Beer Cafe and Bottle Shop is in Bethel Park, a suburb just outside of Pittsburgh. The restaurant's menu features bar-style German food such as bratwurst, kielbasa, German potato salad and light German fare.

Boyce Mayview Park is located less than 5 miles from Barley's & Hop's. Over 8 miles of hiking trails wind through the park's woodlands and wetlands. The meadows in Boyce Mayview are at their peak during the brilliant spring wildflower blooming season.
