Phoenix, Arizona, is the capital of the Grand Canyon State. With a plethora of trails in and around the city as well as in the far-reaching sides of the state, Phoenix residents and visitors will not be left searching for good nature hikes. Hikes in the area range from easy to difficult, some accommodating children and/or dogs, with a wide variety of elevation changes and spectacular views. Finding a hiking club can make your adventure into the wilderness a wonderful experience by helping you meet new friends, explore new areas or share your own expertise with those who are not as familiar with the outdoors. Whatever your goal, there are various Phoenix hiking clubs to suit your personal needs.

Friends Hiking

Since 1996, Friends Hiking, based in Phoenix, has led over 400 hikes in eight states and Mexico. There are roughly 60 members aged 25 to 60 years. Friends Hiking groups lead hikes, backpacks and kayaking/canoe trips. The group has activities in levels ranging from beginner to advanced and monthly meetings as well as an extensive website.

Arizona Outdoor and Travel Club

Arizona Outdoor and Travel Club (AOTC) is a nonprofit outdoor club based in Phoenix. The club organizes hikes, bike rides, camping and 4x4 off-road travel trips, mostly in the Phoenix area. Outdoor adventurists can join AOTC as a member for a small yearly fee or contribute a limited amount to join in on any of the open activities.

Backcountry Hiking Club

The Backcountry Hiking Club is a volunteer-run organization. Members lead groups on hikes in the Phoenix area as well as greater Arizona, typically over the weekends. Hikes generally range anywhere between five and 13 miles and have varying elevation changes and levels of difficulty. The group leaders are from all walks of life: young, old, single, married, men and women. The hikes are open to all, though not usually designed for children.
