New Westminster, British Columbia, was the first capital of British Columbia and is the oldest city in western Canada. It is on the Fraser River, and is 12 miles east of Vancouver. The 2006 census listed a population of 58,549. Just 54 miles north of New Westminster is Squamish, home to some of the best rock climbing in Canada. There is sea kayaking just 10 miles away in English Bay, which abuts Vancouver, or in the Pacific Ocean further west. Skiers can drive 30 minutes to small hills such as Cypress Mountain, or make the 90-minute drive north to Whistler, the biggest ski resort in North America.

The Met Hotel New Westminster

The Met Hotel is the oldest hotel in the area, and is next to the Sky Train. Built in 1892, the Met is a heritage building, and has 26 rooms. Each floor has its own lobby area. The hotel is pet-friendly, offers free Wi-Fi and has a writing desk in each room, and will provide a crib/playpen upon request.
