Newington offers a taste of the outdoors for residents of nearby state capital Hartford, Connecticut. Around Newington's Mill Pond Falls, a small natural waterfall, there is exceptional hiking, ice skating and picnicking, depending on the season. The Connecticut Department of Transportation is also headquartered there. Currently, there are plans by the Town Council to install commercial centers and more hotels in Newington in a concerted effort to attract more tourism and eliminate a few dilapidated industrial complexes.
