Posada de Santiago
The Posada de Santiago offers lakeside rooms and suites, but the accommodation stars here are the six volcanic-stone cottages spread around the garden, each with its own name: Luna, Angel, Sol, Quetzal, Palma and Maya. The cottages come with two beds, a fireplace and hammock.
The on-site restaurant is another bragging point, with its homemade sauces, breads and ice cream. The coffee is grown and roasted on-site, and guests during the harvest months of November through February are welcome to watch or join the picking, drying, husking and roasting process.
Guests have use of the posada's sauna, spa and swimming pool, and there is Wi-Fi access as well. For recreational fun, the hotel offers guided canoe, horseback and fishing trips. But perhaps among the most popular of activities are the guided hikes. Tour guide Dolores Ratzan leads trips to Chuitinamit, an ancient Maya fortress city, and the hotel staff can book hikes up the nearby volcanoes with a local guide.
