About 60 miles north of Austin, Texas, is Killeen, a city of nearly 117,000. Just outside Killeen is one of the largest Army bases in the world, Fort Hood, which has more than 33,000 inhabitants. The city was founded in 1882 by the Santa Fe Railroad as a shipping station for cotton and cattle. Killeen's wide-open spaces allow for some outdoor adventures on foot or bike. The city has 31 parks, swimming pools, tennis courts and a public golf course. Visit Stillhouse Hollow Lake and Belton Lake located just 20 minutes outside the city for boating, fishing and swimming. When you work up a big appetite, visit these restaurants for some Texas-sized steaks.

Texas Land & Cattle Steakhouse

Open for lunch and dinner, serving up juicy steaks, burgers, seafood, ribs and pasta, the Texas Land & Cattle Steakhouse in Killeen welcomes big appetites. The restaurant is conveniently located just off the East Central Texas Expressway. Grab an ice cold beer or margarita, Texas tea or a glass of wine. Enjoy a rib-eye, New York strip, sirloin, porterhouse or filet mignon served with sides like fries, baked or mashed potatoes and creamed spinach. Other entrees include grilled salmon, fish tacos, meatloaf, hand-breaded shrimp, country fried steak and chicken pasta. For vegetarians, there are soups, salads and cooked vegetables. Splurge on a dessert such as the Big Brazos brownie, Jack Daniel's pie or peach bread pudding. Dress is casual and there are numerous items under $10. There's a kid's menu for ages 12 and under, and you can host a private party in one of the banquet rooms.

Texas Roadhouse

Grab a steak from this popular chain restaurant where you are encouraged to eat peanuts and throw the shells on the floor. The atmosphere is all Texas--casual, friendly and enthusiastic Southern hospitality. The steaks are hand-cut, the ribs award winning and the bread freshly baked. All the food is made from scratch and the portions are large. Steak selections include T-bone, rib eye, New York strip, sirloin and prime rib, all served with sides. Other entrees include chicken fried steak, pulled pork, fried catfish and grilled salmon or shrimp. Enjoy a beer or margarita and desserts like Granny's apple classic. Appetizers include onion blossoms, tater skins and fried jalapenos known as Rattlesnake Bites. For the kids, there are hot dogs, mac-n-cheese, mini-cheeseburgers and more. There are salads and cooked vegetables if you don't eat meat. Texas Roadhouse is very reasonably priced, especially considering how large the portions are. The Killeen restaurant has a dine-early special and you can call ahead to avoid a wait.

Nami Japanese Steak and Sushi

If you want steak with an Asian twist, try Nami located on Killeen's west side near Fort Hood. Enjoy a steak cooked right in front of you Hibachi-style, along with other Hibachi entrees including chicken, seafood and vegetables. Nami has tempura, sashimi and sushi, fried and white rice, soups and salads, beer and liquor. Dress is casual but be aware--Nami will cost you more than a Texas-style steakhouse, but it comes with Hibachi entertainment.
