The Roanoke Valley in Virginia was first explored by pioneers in the 17th century. By 1740, settlers from Pennsylvania and other parts of Virginia began farming the land located west of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the great valley between Maryland and Tennessee. There's fishing at spots like Smith Mountain Lake, Roanoke River and Carvin's Cove. Go boating and camping, visit the Mill Mountain Zoo, explore the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest, and shop the Historic Roanoke Farmers' Market. Kabuki Japanese Steak & Seafood House

This restaurant is named after the ancient Japanese romantic dramas about nobles, warriors and common people, a tradition which dates back to the early 1600s. Here you can enjoy specialty sushi rolls like the Kabuki roll with sesame seeds outside and crab, shrimp and cucumber inside, or the caterpillar roll with wasabi tobiko and tuna. Kabuki also has Maki/Bamboo Mat Rolls, hand rolls and sushi/sashimi combinations. Other Japanese favorites include tempura, teriyaki chicken or steak and meals cooked Hibachi-style. All dinners include soup, salad, vegetables and fried rice. Beer, wine, sake and house drinks are served and all appetizers are under $8.00. Dinners start at $13.45 and go up to $36.45 for the Hibachi double lobster. There is a kid's menu, and you can choose to dine in or carry out.

Ben Gui Sushi

For quaint dinners or large parties, Ben Gui Sushi serves fresh fish in a relaxed atmosphere. Voted "Best Sushi" in Roanoke for the last three years, the restaurant is owned by Executive Sushi Chef Ben Gui Chen. His motto is "Trust Me" which, according to the restaurant's website, means he believes in creating meals personally for each individual, and he recommends you relax and trust him to "play you a symphony of tasteful treasures that your mouth will sing to." The restaurant has numerous sushi creations with funky names like "Sex on the Beach" maki. One of Ben's signature rolls, the "Red Dragon," was voted one of the "50 Favorite Foods" by readers of the Roanoke Times newspaper. If you have the time, ask for Ben's five-course sushi and sake-tasting. In addition to sushi, Ben serves traditional Japanese fare in a fun, casual atmosphere. Thursday nights are Ladies Night from 6-9 p.m. with drink and sushi specials. Prices are mid-range with lunch from $7.50 to $16.50, $9.50 to $21.50 for most entrees, and $3 to $10.50 for individual sushi rolls.

Kobe Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar

Sit at the sushi bar or watch award-winning Japanese chefs create your meal on the Teppanyaki table at Kobe. The restaurant offers a wide variety of sushi and sashimi, cooked seafood, soups and salads, and steaks including the world famous Kobe beef steaks. Appetizers include sushi, vegetable egg rolls, dumplings, shrimp and scallops. There is a kid's menu, beer, wine, liquor and sake are served, and desserts like fried ice cream and fried cheesecake. Happy hour is from 5-6 p.m. and from 9 p.m. to closing with discounts on drinks and some menu items. Sunday through Thursday, catch the early dinner from 5-6 p.m. and choose from best-selling dishes at special prices. Wear casual attire, but not bike shorts, and be prepared for mid to high-range prices.
