After walking the Freedom Trail around Boston or catching a Red Sox game at Fenway Park, why not step outside the city to some of the charming areas immediately around Boston for some authentic Portuguese food? What better treat after a day of fishing on Castle Island than the some Portuguese salt cod at one of the greater Boston area's wonderful Portuguese restaurants.

Restaurant Casa Portugal: Traditional Portuguese Cuisine

Casa Portugal is Boston's oldest Portuguese restaurant and offers catering service as well as in-house dining for lunch (Monday to Saturday 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and Sunday noon to 3:00 p.m.) and dinner (Monday-Thursday 3:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., and Sunday 3:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.). Originally opened in 1976, Portugal native Chef Fernando Gomes bought the restaurant in 1995. The online menu offers meat and fish entrees only, and no vegetarian options. The extensive online wine list is interactive, with each wine's name clickable to find out more about that wine.

Located along the Charles River, Cambridge is home to Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Portugalia Restaurante

Also located in scenic Cambridge is Portugalia Restaurante. The specialty here is salt cod and foods from northern Portugal. It offers in-house lunch and dinner (Sunday-Thursday 12 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., and Friday and Saturday 12 p.m.-10 p.m.) and a bar (11:30 a.m.-1 a.m.) as well private functions for up to 45 people and a catering menu. The dinner menu offers salt cod cooked six different ways: grilled, baked, poached, shredded, casserole, and stewed. The restaurant also offers nearly a dozen non-seafood options. The wine menu is arranged by region.

Cavaleiro's Restaurant

Located in Lowell, Massachusetts, the birthplace of the American industrial revolution, Cavaleiros Restaurant boasts numerous local awards, including the Gold Plate Award by Billy Costas' TV Dinner Show (November 2005) and 1st Place Soup Award by Lowell Winterfest for their seafood soup (2006). A frequent haunt of local celebrities such as Niki Tsongas and Sal DeMasi, Cavaleiros offers in-house dining, a take-out menu, and a separate kids' menu. The extensive menu offers several house specialties, including two items available in-house only. The wine list offers several wines by the glass or half-bottle. Cavaleiros is open Tuesdays and Wednesdays 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., Thursdays through Sundays 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., and is closed on Mondays.
