Homosassa, Florida is a small town in Citrus County. There are plenty of opportunities to explore the local Homosassa River and other waterways by kayak, canoe, airboat or as part of a guided tour. Visitors should expect to spot a large variety of Florida wildlife along the way, including alligators, dolphins and many birds of prey. Manatees flock to the Homosassa River, making Homosassa a popular manatee-spotting destination.

Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park

At Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, visitors can spot a wide variety of Florida wildlife, including cougars, otters and deer. The park is set on the Homosassa River and closes off sections of the river to form its animals' habitats. There is also a boat tour of nearby Pepper Creek.

Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park features a special exhibit for the endangered manatees, including an underwater viewing observatory. Park staff hold educational programs about the manatee, and other park animals, throughout the day.

Captain Mike's Sunshine River Tours

On Captain Mike's Sunshine River Tours, passengers have a close encounter with wild manatees. All three tours offer the chance to snorkel and swim with the manatees; the main difference between tours is tour size and extra amenities like lunch. A wet suit, snorkel gear, life jacket and everything else you'll need to snorkel with the manatees will be supplied.

Captain Mike's also offers scallop diving tours where participants can learn how to catch scallops. All gear, including a fishing license, is supplied in the cost of the tour. There is also a scenic airboat tour of the Homosassa River for those that prefer to stay dry.

Riversport Kayaks

Riversport Kayaks rents a variety of boats, including several types of individual kayaks, tandem kayaks and canoes. Boats can be rented by the hour, or for a half- or full-day. Riversport Kayaks holds weekly guided trips to Homosassa springs to view manatees, dolphins and several birds of prey. There is also a tour geared exclusively towards tracking manatees. Finally, Riversport Kayaks offers a selection of specialty kayaks for kayak fishing.
