Rotterdam in south Holland, Netherlands, is home to 600,000 and Europe's largest seaport. Due to war damage, it is composed mainly of buildings constructed after the 1940s. This four-star hotel near the center of Rotterdam is within walking distance of the harbor. All around it are hundreds of miles of bike trails winding through the city and countryside. The hotel is pet-friendly and entirely non-smoking; it has a restaurant and bar and a large garden with an outdoor pool and terrace. The Novotel is contemporary and ideal for families with children or romantic couples. Guests park for free and the rooms have Wi-Fi and air-conditioning. Eat on the terrace of the hotel's French restaurant, open for lunch and dinner seven days a week, or order room service. The bar serves drinks and snacks middays and evenings. Take a jog around the track before you hit the pool or Hoek Van Holland Beach. The hotel offers currency exchange, laundry service and has a gift and newspaper shop. For the kids, there are indoor and outdoor playgrounds and video games. The hotel is accessible by public transportation, including bus, underground train and tram. Rotterdam airport is only 6.2 miles from the hotel and 12.5 miles from the ferries. Take your car or public transportation to Sealife-Scheveningen aquarium and the Leiden botanical gardens or bike to the Blijdorp Rotterdam Zoo. It's just a short walk to the canals to enjoy the city's architectural and natural beauty on a boat tour. As of November 2009, rooms start at $117 per night (€79).

Bilderberg Parkhotel Rotterdam

Known as the "Grande Dame" of Rotterdam, this hotel is centrally located alongside the canal within walking distance of museums, shops, restaurants and a sophisticated nightlife. Serving guests for 80 years, the Bilderberg has 189 villa and garden rooms with sleek, modern décor and everyday comforts; some garden rooms have balconies. Once you've returned from touring Rotterdam's famous museums, hiking and climbing the Euromast, relax in the hotel's sauna, pool or solarium. The rooms have Wi-Fi, pets are allowed, and there's a sauna, outdoor pool and solarium. Work out in the hotel's fitness center or play tennis or golf. The hotel has a bar that serves food plus a French/Mediterranean restaurant with al fresco seating in nice weather. There is pubic transportation nearby and the airport is within five miles. Rooms range between $117 and $177 per night (€79 to €119).

Room Rotterdam

This backpacker's hostel was voted the best hostel in the Netherlands in 2009 by Hostelworld.com. It's located in the Scheepvaartkwartier district enclosed by the river Maas, the Erasmus Bridge and the park at the Euromast, and it is just steps away from public transportation. The hostel has 16 rooms, each with its own theme, including the Love room for romantic couples or the Art room, which sleeps four and has a modern art theme. The Room Rotterdam also has dorms that sleep five, six, eight and 10; rooms are neat and contemporary with bunk beds. Walk from the hostel to the harbor and hop on a boat excursion, or get your gear and head out on one of Rotterdam's many bike trails. Socialize in the foyer with drinks, TV, games and Internet. There are free breakfast and a guest kitchen where you can cook your own meals as well as self-service laundry facilities. Some nights the hostel "parties big time", according to its website, with free pancakes, bingo, movie nights and the Poetry Slam Jam. Double rooms are $74.50/night (€50) in the low season and $82/night (€55) in high. Dorms range from $28 per person/night (€18,50) to $38 per person/night (€25,50).
