The buses travel in a loop and serve each stop every 15 to 30 minutes. Old Town Trolley tours give visitors all day access to three on/off loops around the city. In addition to the monuments, memorials and Arlington Cemetery, the trolley serves locations away from the Mall including the National Zoo, National Cathedral, Georgetown and Dupont Circle.

Gray Line runs a 25-stop hop-on, hop-off tour on open-top double-decker buses. Their ticket offers two consecutive days of unlimited use. In addition, Gray Line provides visitors with the chance to see the monuments illuminated at night on the "DC After Dark" tour. Stops include the US Capitol and the Memorials.

Urban Communications Tours arranges a variety of topic-based four-hour tours around Washington DC. Their "Jacqueline Kennedy at Home in Washington Tour" introduces some of Jackie O's favorite sites while she lived in DC as a middle school student and as First Lady. The "African America Historic" Tour takes visitors to Howard University, the nation's oldest historically black college, the former neighborhood of Duke Ellington and the African American Civil War Memorial.
