Clayton, N.Y. is a small town facing the St. Lawrence River. With a population of 4,817, according to the 2000 Census, the town is minutes from the Canadian border. Clayton is part of the 1,000 Islands region, a popular recreational destination with easy access to boating (including white water rafting and canoeing), scuba diving, and fishing in the summer plus skiing and snowmobiling in the winter. The Thousand Islands Inn

The Thousand Islands Inn mixes history with modern outdoor sports. Dating back to 1897, the Inn is located in downtown Clayton and features 13 rooms renovated to a late 1800s décor. Despite this rich history, the Inn specializes in modern vacation packages. For example, it has its own charter boat, the "A.B.'s Office," designed especially for sport fishers. You can take a half-day voyage or opt for a package that caters to longer expeditions, complete with guided fishing instructors specializing in trips along the northeastern United States. The Inn also offers scuba diving packages, including supervised wreck dives and unlimited waterfront bottle diving. The Inn's restaurant also has received national recognition. According to the owners, 1000 Island dressing was first served at the Inn, which is close to the Antique Boat Museum, the Thousand Islands Museum of Clayton, and Uncle Sam Boat Tours. All rooms offer complimentary continental breakfast, WiFi, private bathrooms with tubs and showers, and 93 channels of color/cable TV.

Fair Wind Motel and Cottages

The Fair Wind Motel and Cottages has a 60-foot boat dock for guests to use. Boat rental shops are available nearby. There is also a heated in-ground swimming pool, golf practicing area, and six acres of park land. Boat and trailer parking is available. All rooms feature WiFi, air-conditioning, microwave, coffeemaker, and refrigerator--plus cable with HBO.

CWAY Motel and Resort

The C-Way Motel and Resort caters to golf lovers with an 18-hole golf course located on the premises. The resort offers package deals if you want to stay at the hotel and use the course. In addition to an in-ground pool and a large picnic area, amenities include air-conditioning for all rooms, telephones, and cable TV. Wireless Internet access is also available in the lobby. The motel offers 42 rooms, including four 1- and 2-bedroom apartments with full kitchens and living rooms.

K's Motel and Cottages is located between the French Creek Wildlife Preserve to the west and downtown Clayton .5 miles to the east. All rooms are carpeted with private showers, electric heat, cable TV, and WiFi. The owners also offer several room packages that include boat cruises, diving trips, fishing expeditions, and 16-foot boat rental.
