Yellowstone Self-Drive Tours Using a GPS

Yellowstone Self-Drive Tours Using a GPS
The size of Rhode Island and Delaware combined, Yellowstone National Park offers countless opportunities for grand outdoor adventure. Visitors see a myriad of geothermal wonders, beautiful landscapes and wildlife along the park's roads, and hiking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails. Knowing how to get around this vast park requires careful planning. Instead of spending your time planning and researching, consider putting technology to work--use a GPS-based device to point out park features and to help you reach the trails you want to go to.

Virtual Tour Guide

The GPS units offered by Virtual Tour Guide make it easy to enjoy taking in the park at your own pace. Just touch the screen and point to your destination--you can even choose fishing holes or hiking trails. As you follow the directions to that location, enjoy audio and graphical information about the area you travel through. Rent the unit with a minimum half-day rental or up to seven days. Pick up or drop off the units in any number of locations near the park, including West Yellowstone, Cody or Gardiner. If you plan to travel through Grand Teton National Park on the way to Yellowstone, pick one up in Jackson.

Travel By GPS

While far more limited than rental devices, computer-savvy travelers may want to download the free guide at TravelByGPS. Just transfer the download to your GPS unit via free software the site provides. The tour starts in Madison Junction near the west entrance of the park, about 20 miles from West Yellowstone. Featuring 37 points of interest, the tour includes turnouts, vistas, geothermal features, trailheads and other park amenities. As you drive, the unit indicates points of interest, then plays audio to describe the area. Stop anywhere you want, then pick up the route again when you get back in your car.
