Birmingham, Alabama is a busy city of about 230,000 people according to their official website. Within the city of Birmingham, there are many sites to see including the Birmingham Zoo, Vulcan Park and the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Since it is in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Birmingham is a perfect place for the outdoor enthusiast. There are many opportunities for hiking including hiking in Alabama's largest state park known as Oak Mountain State Park, the 1,000-acre Ruffner Mountain nature preserve, the 25,000 acres of Alabama's Sipsey Wilderness Area in the Bankhead National Forest or the 250-acre Moss Rock Preserve that has around 10 miles of hiking footpaths. Lake Neely Henry, Lake Logan Martin, Smith Lake and Bankhead Reservoir all offer opportunities for fishing while Rickwood Caverns offers swimming, camping and hiking in underground caves. For those who enjoy biking, there is a trail loop that is 17 miles long in Oak Mountain State Park. While there are many outdoor activities, there are also old and beautiful hotels in Birmingham.
